ON MIRO'S STEPS
This image was created outside the Joan Miro Foundation in Barcelona. I was
casually composing a shot of the foreground statue with the lamp posts and flag
poles when the man in the background just came along and stood briefly with his
hat in his hand. His positioning was perfect and adds strength and balance to
the image. I wondered later if this was a special service provided by the Miro
Foundation for passing photographers. Maybe this guy is specially trained to
respond when he sees a camera? He assesses the photographer's
intentions, calculates the focal length and framing and decides exactly where in
the shot to stand. It could hardly have been just a happy accident. After I
rattled off a few frames, he just ambled away, presumably glad to have helped
turn an ordinary snap into something rather better.
