This image was created in Limerick - home of Richard Harris, Frank McCourt, the Cranberries, etc - where I was born and grew up. It began life as a relatively ordinary portrait of the sisters, Derval sharp in the foreground and Ciara out of focus a short distance behind. Strong sunlight illuminated the room from a large window to my left. It made an acceptable, if not terribly original, image. But interesting things sometimes happen in the darkroom; shapes on the contact sheet suggest other possibilities. The final image came from using high-contrast printing paper and burning in all the distracting detail of the room.
